Visionaries are easily overwhelmed when it comes to the day to day grunt work of turning their dreams into reality.
Because they can SEE the Future, FEEL the Future, TASTE and TALK about the Future, it is immensely frustrating to not GET to the future right this darn minute.
Because a majority of my coaching clients are creative entrepreneurs, and because the majority of them are visionaries, you can imagine that this is a conversation that rises up frequently during coaching calls.
We talk about the metaphor of the Bucket. Yep, that simple, little non-inspiring bucket of business. We talk about how we fill a bucket.
Sometimes new clients want to talk about WHEN the Bucket is Full. What the bucket will look like, what the bucket will do, feel, how it will function. What they don’t like to talk about is the actual action of filling the bucket. They would rather it get handed to them full and bubbling over with goodness.
Our first paradigm shift in those cases is to begin the hard conversation about what it takes to fill a bucket.
Often, when I ask that question the first time, I hear answers that sound like more visions. “Create a program for…”, “Write a book about…”
I respond with a question that is met with silence.
“What one simple thing can you do right now to put just one drop in the bucket?”
Silence.
I wait for the dawning of the paradigm. One Simple Thing you can take action on now. One, and only one, drop in the bucket.
Then the ideas and action steps begin happening and the big wheel of success begins to move.
They do one thing, then another, then a third and the bottom of the bucket is filled with water. They come back next week and do another, then another and more still, and the wheel turns and the bucket is filled a little more. A few months go by and they are surprised that the empty bucket they brought to the first weeks of coaching has water sloshing around in it.
On drop of water repeatedly and consistently put it the bucket fills it.
